What Every Caregiver Should Know About Child Passenger Safety

Advice on child safety when driving

Seat Checks are performed free of Charge, by AAA certified Child passenger safety technicians, many of whom are police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses and traffic safety professionals.

  • No Excuse will bring them back.
  • Secure children properly every time they ride in a car.
  • Most crashes occur near home and can be violent, even at lower speeds. When used correctly, child safety seats can prevent injuries and save lives.
  • Children 12 and under should ride properly restrained in the back seat:
  • Infants should ride in rear-facing safety seats as long as possible: at least until they are 12 months old and at least 20 pounds.
  • Kids over 1 year old who weigh 20 – 40 pounds and can no longer ride rear –facing should ride in a forward-facing children safety seats.
  • Kids 40 pounds must use booster seats until the lap and should belts fit correctly around 8 years old and 80 pounds.
  • Once safety belts fit children correctly (usually around age 8), the lap and shoulder belts should be used.

Seat Checks are performed free of Charge, by AAA certified Child passenger safety technicians, many of whom are police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses and traffic safety professionals. There are 3 permanent fitting stations in the local area.

  1. Cedar Grove, New Jersey: Old Essex County Hospital Fire Stations. Fairview Ave. in Cedar Grove Seat Checks are performed every Wednesday and Thursday from 9am – 4pm. No appointment is necessary for information call, 973-557-3830.
  2. Westfield, New Jersey: Union County Police Department 300 North Ave.East. Seat checks are performed every Wednesday and Thursday form 7 am – 11 am. No appointment necessary. For information call. 908-654-9893.
  3. Randolph, New Jersey: Seat checks are performed the first Friday of every month from 10 am – 2pm No appointment is necessary For information call 973-537-7109.
